We reviewed the course outline and got started on the Elements of Design; Engineering Design Process; and the Engineering Design Journals. I emphasized throughout this week that I expected them to fail along the way as it will only bring a deeper level of understanding of the material we will cover. That being said I gave the students the challenge to design the best Spaghetti Bridge. They had to work in groups of three with each team member being responsible for a specific area for assessment. One member had to take the groups rough sketches from their Engineering Design Journals and formally put them into a series of working drawings with specific dimensions. The next member then had to use an online 3D modelling tool to create the vision of their bridge, and the last team member then had to create a very detail step by step set of instructions for putting their bridge together. It wasn't until the class before they started to build that I threw a twist at them by telling them that they would not be building their own bridges rather they would be handing off their designs and instructions to the building team. My main goal was to reinforce the Engineering Design Process and stress how important as Designers that they clearly communicate what their vision is. Well we never quite got all the way as we ran out of time but the students had fun in the process and will be revisiting their bridges in the days to come. Stay tuned for further updates with pictures.
